History
Lennon (1863) stated it was common everywhere in his 'List of Lepidoptera taken near Dumfries.' Gordon (1919) stated it to be not uncommon in Wigtownshire, but that it seemed to be scarce at Corsemalzie. W. S. Brocklehurst informed Gordon that he took it commonly at light at Craigenveoch, Glenluce, in August, 1910. Earliest date was 6th August 1906.

Archibald Russell (1944) listed it as occurring near Gatehouse of Fleet (VC73) during the years 1942-43. Sir Arthur Duncan (1909-84) during his lifetime had found it at Closeburn, Tynron and Castlehill, Dumfries (all VC72).

During 1974-92 all seven Rothamsted stations recorded 230 records between them, showing it to be widespread.

From 1992 to 2010 the regular trapped sites at Kirkton and Mersehead RSPB provided good numbers of the 250 records in the period, with others from widely scattered sites across the region.
