History
Lennon (1863) stated that it was not common, but that it had occurred at Kirkconnell (VC73). Gordon (1919) found it common on hedges and on tree trunks after dark; it also came to light. Earliest date was 15th October 1898 with the latest being one found on a tree trunk at Corsemalzie on 4th January 1912.

Sir Arthur Duncan (1909-84) during his lifetime had found it at Closeburn, Tynron and Castlehill, Dumfries (all VC72). Archibald Russell (1944) listed it as occurring near Gatehouse of Fleet (VC73) during the years 1942-43.
During 1974-92 over 400 records were recorded from six of the Rothamsted stations, Caerlaverock being the odd one out even though it was run at the right time of year.

Due to its late autumn/winter appearance there are not many many records, apart from at the regular home trapping sites like Kirkton, Durisdeer, Cally Woods and Forest Moor.

Life cycle
One generation. Overwinters as an egg on its foodplant.
Larvae are present early April to late June.

Larval foodplants
A wide variety of broadleaved trees and shrubs such as oaks, birches, hawthorns and Sycamore.

Identification
The male is very variable in colour, but is separable from Dotted Border and Scarce Umber. The flightless female has rows of black dots down a yellowish-white abdomen.

Habitat
Abundant in woodland, but occurs in gardens, moorland, heathland and hedgerows.
