History
Somerville (1858) while on a visit to the Moffat area had found two specimens locally. Lennon (1860) stated he had bred 10 on, presumably from larvae he had collected from around Dumfries whilst out rambling. By 1863, Lennon stated it was very rare and had only found it near Tinwald Downs. Gordon (1919) found it not uncommon on the moors around Garheugh, Luce Bay, in July. Earliest date was 27th June 1906.

Sir Arthur Duncan (1909-84) during his lifetime had found it at the Black Loch and Kirkconnell Flow (VC73) and on the Lochar Moss and Castlehill, Dumfries (VC72). In 1976 there were two Rothamsted records from Penninghame and Caerlaverock respectively.

It was not until the mid to late 1990s that it was refound in suitable habitat at Raeburn Flow, Lochwood Oaks, Catherinefield Moss, Bell's Flow, Longbridge Muir, Far Cairn and Kelhead Flow.

Since then the next record was at Castle Loch, Mochrum, in July, 2006. In 2011, further singles were found at Auldhouse Rig and Glencaple (both VC72) in July.

Life cycle

Larval foodplants
Larvae feed on the flowers and leaves of Bilberry, Cowberry and Cranberry.

Identification
Very distinctive with the reddish-flush near the apex on the cold grey forewings and dark crossband.
