History
Lennon (1863) stated that it was very rare, but that it had occurred at Terregles (VC72). Gordon (1919) under Cidaria picata Hb. found it to be scarce, giving records for 29 September 1897 and 11th November 1906, with a spring appearance on 14th May 1906. These records are a case of mistaken identification, as the old name, which is derived from Kloet & Hincks (1972) is correct. Both Lennon's and Gordon's records are unacceptable for this species.

The first fully documented Cloaked Carpet is recorded by Plant (1999) who states that while carrying out survey work at Abbey Burn Foot (VC73) he caught a freshly emerged specimen in a MV trap on 5th July 1998. It was later exhibited at the British Entomological and Natural History Society meeting. Another appeared at Ecclefechan on the National Moth Night of 9th July 2005. Finally, one was caught on 21st July 2011 at Mersehead RSPB. During early July 2014 ten were caught in a Robinson trap at Clifton (VC73).

Life cycle
One generation. Overwinters as a pupa, in a cocoon in loose earth. Larvae during late July to mid-September.
