History
Lennon (1860) stated he had bred 10 on, presumably from larvae he had collected from around Dumfries whilst out rambling. By 1863, Lennon had found it near Caerlaverock Castle, but had found it to be not common around the Dumfries area. K. J. Morton of Edinburgh (1900) whilst on a visit in July 1899 to Wigtownshire had found this species in the Monreith area.

Gordon (1919) had found it to be locally common flying in open spaces in woods at dusk around Corsemalzie, Monreith and Alticry, Wigtownshire. Larvae were found to be common on lichen-covered thorns or sloes, 48 being collected near our front drive on 2nd April 1906. One taken at light at Corsemalzie on 26th September 1910, would suggest a second brood as in England. Earliest date was 1st July 1905 and 1906. Sir Arthur Duncan (1909-84) during his lifetime had found it at Tynron and Castlehill, Dumfries (VC72).

During 1974-78 it was recorded twenty times at only two Rothamsted stations, Gatehouse of Fleet and Bridge of Dee (VC73). Elsewhere, Kirkton (VC72), Cally Woods and Mersehead RSPB (VC73) proved to be its stonghold from 1993-2010.

Life cycle
One generation. Overwinters as a larva from late August to end of May. Pupations takes place in a cocoon among lichens.

Larval foodplants
Larvae feed on lichens.

Identification
The fine, jagged and irregular outer cross-line on the forewing and hindwing, which is speckled with green and black should distinguish it.

Habitat
Scrub. Also woodland and rocky coasts.
