Species accounts

The following pages give individual accounts for each species that has been recorded in Dumfries and Galloway.  These can be browsed using the vernacular (English) names or scientific names, or can be searched using the search box above.

Each account lists the Bradley (2000) number for the species followed by the vernacular and scientific names with the authority. Amendments to this have been taken from various entomological journals since published. Trinomials are used where the subspecies is known.

The History & Status section gives a brief summary of its status from the earliest records to the modern day. The known flight period is given. Where there is no mention of larva or pupa records it is because there are none. In the cases of difficult species some points on the latest identification features will be given as an aid to recording. Records of undetermined species (i.e. those recorded as groups or aggregates) are not listed here but are recorded under the relevant taxonomic grouping in the database.

If you have a new record for a VC please take a quality photograph or get it verified by a competent judge. See the listing for what species have been seen in the three counties.
